Last year the Indy 500 auto race celebrated its 100th anniversary. The first race took place in 1911, and was won by Ray Harroun. The average race speed was 74.602 mph. With 250,000 seats; the race is held in the biggest sports facility for spectators on the globe. This is a grueling 500 mile race. Each lap on this oval track is 2.5 miles in length; which means the drivers must travel 200 laps in search for victory, and racing immortality.

Over the past century only 5 drivers have won the Indy 500 back to back. Those drivers would be:

Wilbur Shaw (1939-40) He also won in 1937, the only driver to win 3 of 4.
Mauri Rose (1947-48)
Bill Vukovich (1953-54)
Al Unser (1970-71)
Helio Castroneves (2001-02)

Dan Wheldon won the race last year, and in 2005. Dan would die at the age of 33 in October of last year in a car crash in the IndyCar World Championship in Las Vegas.
