The old man and the V( W )Jonathan Munk
An 86-year-old graphic designer recently filed a lawsuit against Volkswagon saying he is the designer of the initial, nearly 60-year-old VW logo. Nikolai Borg doesnt need financial settlement. He’s suing Volkswagon for not recognizing his hand-in the style.
I am not after income, Borg said in articles on FreelanceUK.com. I simply wish to live to see my work identified. I’ll maybe not be satisfied with such a thing less than traditional approval.
Borg claims a Nazi commissioned him to create the now world famous brand prior to WW II. After being told the task was on hold, he was astonished to find out his individual design appear on military vehicles a couple of years later. He’s been trying to get acceptance since.
Credit-taking inside the graphic design world is saturated in gray area. A company may hire a designer in the future up with a, and then hire a different company to update their logo a few years later. The changes in design could be small, and may even go unnoticed by many people. But who has the credit for picking out the design?
Which designers have the right to record them because the author of a particular search? Undoubtedly the first designer deserves credit for picking out a stable design, but doesnt a future designer deserve credit for increasing a design, particularly when the logo the business uses is a of the work of a second or even next designer?
For all we know, Mr. Borg posted an excellent style, that was then changed, perhaps even several times, and then brought into use.
And how about companies that employ a designer ahead up with logo concepts, then simply take these concepts and have an designer work with them until they have the logo they were searching for all along? This is not illegal, since the ideas are bought by the company in essence from the designer. The business can do whatever they desire together once that transaction is complete.
But getting credit where it’s warranted can become a difficult, sometimes frustrating game, as Im sure Nikolai Borg can admit.
