Changuu Private Island Paradise, also called Prison Island is an beautiful heaven with a private white sandy beach, thick forest, pristine placid waters and coral reef. This paradise in western Tanzania is also a for unusual bird species and a special band of permanent residents since 1919 referred to as the Aldabra Giant tortoises. This jeopardized species were a gift from the Seychelles government and have cultivated from a preliminary number of 4-to over 100. Several of the tortoises are considered to be over 100 years old.
Changuu Island lies 8 kilometers to the northwest of Stone Town or Zanzibar town and is all about 800m by 400m at the largest part. This Five Star island’ resort in-the heart of the Indian Ocean is a quick 20 -30 minutes travel on an old-fashioned dhow (fishing-boat) The Island is perimetered with a beautiful coral reef that is just like a fantasy to everyone who loves snorkelling. The lovely white beach is fantastic for sunbathing or whiling the glorious sunset absent.
As the history of the Changuu Island is exciting most perfect places. In the 1860s, the desolate island was given to 2 Arabs from the Sultan Seyyid Majid. They used it as a detention centre for rebel slaves. In 1893, after Zanzibar became a Protectorate, General Sir Lloyd William Mathews (who was a Minister), bought Changuu Island for that Zanzibar Government from its former Arab owners using the aim of creating a prison. The island was bought by the Arabs especially because slave trade have been eliminated. A prison to serve the stone town was built on the island but it was instead used as a quarantine station for the entire East Africa region. By 1894 development of the prison was completed and the island became called Prison Island.
Zanzibar being one of the most used port area at that time, the authorities were worried about the danger of epidemics brought by passengers and cargo from over the oceans and so the island was given as a quarantine island. As a result of periodic and monsoons arrival of ships only between December and March, the island was frequently free of quarantined individuals. And therefore of these times, Changuu was one of the preferred leisure places for European citizens and Zanzibaris. These readers used to remain in a bungalow, built-in the late 1890s, locally referred to as European Bungalow. The bungalow has been converted and artfully repaired into Mathews Restaurant. Previously the only accessible fresh water was rain water stored in underground tanks but recently a pipeline from Zanzibar mainland offers fresh water to the island. The Mathews’ Restaurant (named after Sir General Lloyd Mathews) has capacity for 5-0 addresses and features good International Cuisine. Its vast terrace overlooks the engaging pool and enjoys a re-freshing sea breeze. Much more, a dip in an all natural lagoon in the western side of the area, where Sea Turtles can often be seen is also available.
In 1931 a Quarantine Area with new buildings was constructed in the south-west of the area, which gave the Quarantine Station a capacity to allow for people. After the island lost is role as a Station, due to insufficient use, the buildings started to destroy. Today, the remains of those semi-collapsed houses have now been adroitly became 1-2 superb sea-view rooms with a lovely club called the cove. Candlelight meals in the block facing the restored ruins are one of the most intimate experiences in Changuu Private Island Paradise and the picture of sleek dhows fishing at night provokes ones imagination back to the ancient times when the dhows were the foundation of Zanzibar and indeed the Indian Ocean.
The Prison Ruins have been adapted to new uses and have been restored to their original fashion. The Prison Fort is currently the primary cultural area of the island. Leisure facilities in the Prison Fort include a club, a library, a Restaurant and an exclusive store. In its north-west part, Changuu Private Island Paradise also offers 15 modern elegant locations spread over the sea-line and roofed with traditional makuti intended to ensure a cool atmosphere day and night. Ensuite bathrooms are provided with a huge bath-tub and shower. The personal outside verandas face out to the sea, increasing the views and sounds of the Ocean. The island is a superb situation for any photographer or for anyone willing only to relax and take pleasure in the serenity that this beautiful island provides. For a few work generating activity there’s a floodlight tennis court within the bush just in case the home walking safari that covers the island in 15minutes is too light an activity.
