The Triad Symptoms of Type I and Type II Diabetes Mellitus
There are two forms of diabetes, and these are Type I or juvenile diabetes and Type 2 or adult-onset diabetes. In both types, there is too much glucose in the blood, and inadequate insulin moving into the cells. In juvenile diabetes, the hyperglycemia or unusually high level of sugar in your circulation is due to an absence of insulin. In Type II diabetes, the hyperglycemia is due to the cells becoming resistant to the insulin. There are three classical symptoms that are connected with diabetes, below are some of them.
Symptoms of diabetes
Excessive urination – If you or a loved one goes to the bathroom to micturate much more frequently, consider having an evaluation for diabetes. Increased frequency in urination results as your body tries to reduce the surplus of glucose in the blood. When insulin is lacking or ineffective, the kidneys are unable to move filtered glucose back in the blood. The kidneys will work overtime and the organ attempt to dilute the glucose by pulling in extra water from circulating blood. As a consequence, you will go to the bathroom more times within the day to urinate.
Unquenchable thirst – In diabetes mellitus, excessive thirst or polydipsia occurs because the individual’s blood sugar levels are high and the kidneys are working extremely hard to form more urine to remove the sugar. Because of the quantity of fluid that is eliminated from the body through urination, one can feel really thirsty and tries to correct the deficiency in fluid by having more water.
Insatiable hunger – An individual with undiagnosed or poorly managed diabetes will usually experience a somewhat insatiable hunger, causing them to consume a lot of food. A diabetic individual can experience this because the glucose that is meant to be converted in the cells as energy is instead removed out of the body through urine.
However, these symptoms may also be found in other illnesses. To verify if you or someone in your family has diabetes, tests need to be conducted. At present, there are 3 tests used to detect diabetes, namely, fasting plasma glucose test, oral glucose tolerance test, and random plasma glucose test. A random test which shows blood glucose level of 200 mg/dl or more, as well as the presence of the three symptoms, can indicate that a person has diabetes. Among the three, the Fasting Blood Glucose or FPG test is the suggested test as it is often the most convenient and affordable. This will require a blood extraction after about eight hours of going on a fast. Then again, OGTT, though cumbersome because it entails fasting and taking glucose by mouth, is more sensitive than the other tests for diagnosing pre-diabetes.For more information on diabetes please click here.
