The 411 On The Condition Called Trigeminal Neuralgia
Trigeminal neuralgia is basically a condition that could only be described as neuropathic in nature. It is unlike other medical conditions that can exist in the body for appreciable periods of time without the patient’s knowledge. It is so painful that anyone afflicted of it is likely to know that there is something wrong straightaway. However, trying to pinpoint the progress of the disease to get to that point is not as simple or as straightforward. Once the agonizing pain has been felt, however, there is no mistaking that it is there to stay.
Trigeminal neuralgia is also identified with other names, some of which you may be familiar with. Among them is the name ‘tic doulourex’. There is also the name prosopalgia. Fothergill’s disease is yet another name for it. It is manifested on the trigeminal nerve, which is where the name for the condition is derived from. The use of the prefix ‘tri’ indicates that this condition has something that can be associated with the number three. The tri in this case refers to the ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve. The condition can affect any of these branches, or two or even the whole bunch of them. The part of the body where these nerves are found, and where the pain is felt, is the face. Those include the eye region, the ear region, the nose region, the forehead, the jaws, the scalp or in a sizeable number of cases, the forehead.
If you compare the incidences of men and women having tic doulourex, it is noticeable how women are more prone to this condition. Both men and women can get this condition; it certainly does not choose specific genders. However, women tend to get it more than the males.
Another risk factor for this condition is the age of the person afflicted with it. The progression of this condition might have started at a very early age, but the manifestation (the pain) only occurs once they go beyond the age of 50. But this is not to say that it is inconceivable for younger people to suffer from this particular illness. There were even kids who are below 5 years old who have been diagnosed to have Trigeminal neuralgia. But statistically speaking, for the most part, this is a condition whose symptoms tend to be experienced by people who are getting on in years: after the age of 50.
When you treat Trigeminal neuralgia, you have to know that it entails a number of things. The first thing that would have to be addressed is making the excruciating pain under our control. Secondly, it entails attempting to correct the neuropathy (which can give a more enduring solution, but which can also be very challenging). However, it should be noted that correcting the neuropathy would be more successful if the Trigeminal neuralgia has been diagnosed early on and subjected to immediate treatment. When treating Trigeminal neuralgia, it could be noted how most of them are treated through the use of drugs or medications. Surgery is also another option, especially if the patient prefers a treatment that provides more lasting relief.
