Nail care may not seem important for a lot of people, but if taken for granted, a lot of nail problems can arise which can cause you a lot of pain and discomfort. Just because nails are hard and sturdy parts of our body, it does not mean that it will be impermeable to damage or infections.

The most common cause of nail problems is trauma. This can cause problems such as formation of fingernail ridges, bleeding and white streaks or spots may form on the nails. Trauma is one cause that can be easily avoided by avoiding situations wherein your nails may be put to physical or mechanical damage. But if you work under these circumstances, you can protect yourself by wearing protective equipment to decrease the chances of your nails being damaged through this method.

Having wet nails can contribute to having weak nails. Once these nails are exposed to a bit of stress, they can easily crack thus leading to splitting of the nail. This is of course very painful and would take a long time to heal. Avoid immersing your nails in wet environments so that it does not become weak and brittle.

The constant use of nail polish and use of artificial nails can also contribute to having weak nails. These contain chemicals that get absorbed and can affect how nails grow. This is why the use of these nail products should not be abused just because it makes your nails look better.

Very short nails can also cause problems, specifically ingrown nails. Wearing of improperly fitting shoes can cause nails to curl up which can also form ingrown nails. This nail problem is very painful as it causes your nails to dig into your skin, and makes it more susceptible to infections. This is also very foul smelling so it is a good idea to avoid this particular problem.

Speaking of infections, there are many types of infections that can occur in the nails. Fungi are a very common infection that occurs on the nails of the feet. This is especially true if you do not practice good hygiene with your feet. Moist and dark areas are the favorite places where fungi grow. Some common effects of fungi infections are inflammation and the lifting of the nails from its nail bed.

Aside from fungi, bacteria and viruses can also cause nail infections. When nails are left unclean, these organisms can proliferate and cause diseases such as herpetic whitlow or bacterial paronychia. When these are left untreated, they can cause severe and possible permanent deformities in your nails.

By doing some simple nail care techniques everyday, you can greatly reduce the chances that you encounter the nail problems mentioned above. These are very serious problems that could hinder you from working normally so you should do your best in avoiding them.
