Therefore it is with responsibility. The thought of duty varies much among different countries. In a single country, if a guy doesn’t do certain things, people will say he’s acted wrongly; while if he does these very things in another country, people will say that he didn’t act correctly — and yet we all know that there must be some universal concept of responsibility. Within the same way, one class of society thinks that certain things are among its work, while still another class thinks quite the opposite and will be horrified if it’d to accomplish these things.
Two ways are left open to us — the way of the ignorant, who think that there is only one way to truth and that all the rest are inappropriate, and the way of the wise, who admit that, according to our mental constitution or even the various planes of existence in which we are,duty and morality may vary. The main thing is to know that there are gradations of duty and of morality — that the duty of one state of life,in one set of conditions, won’t and cannot be that of another.
To illustrate: All great teachers have taught, “Resist maybe not evil,” that low – weight could be the highest ethical ideal. We all know that, if a certain quantity of us attempted to put that belief fully into practice, the whole social fabric would drop to pieces, the evil would simply take control of our lives and our qualities, and would do whatever they as with us. It would result in disaster, even though just one day of such low – weight were practised. Yet, naturally, in our heart of hearts we feel the truth of the training “Resist not evil.” This generally seems to us to become the very best ideal; yet to teach this doctrine only would be equivalent to condemning a huge percentage of mankind.
Not just therefore, it’d be making men feel that they were constantly doing wrong, and cause in them scruples of conscience in most their actions; it’d weaken them, and that constant self – disapproval would breed more vice than another weakness would. For the man who has started to hate himself the door to degeneration has already opened; and exactly the same is true of a state.
