Make Sure Your Water Retaining Walls are Built Right

People that live near water, like the beach, or who live near lakes, really need to think about building some type of water retaining wall in front or in the area where the water rises near their home. Water retaining walls are made in such a way that the water flows away from the home and the walls. This way the water can’t damage your home or flood your home.

Before starting your project you want to learn the basics of water retaining walls, so that you get them built the right way.

First these walls depend on the foundation and need to be built up from the foundation. This way the retaining wall won’t have any movement or shudder. The retaining wall should be built in a method warranted by the type of soil that is around the home.

There are some places where you can just put a retaining wall right on the ground, but most areas need some type of concrete footing put in first. Most ground areas are not sturdy enough and they either shift or compact so there is a definite need for a foundation, otherwise the wall may sink. The foundation keeps the wall in place and keeps it from shifting, sinking, or moving.

Then there is the issue of drainage. A water retaining wall’s purpose is to keep water away from the wall and ultimately the house, so it is logical that the retaining wall has to have some type of drainage installed.

Most walls have a perforated drainage pipe that goes along the wall. The water then flows through the pipe instead of into the dirt and flooding. Pay attention to the way water moves through the property so you know how to lay the pipe.
