How to get a muscle car cheaply
We all know petrol is dear now and in this new era governments are making big cars mosre costly to run. This seems to be not good news for fans of muscle cars. The answer is to follow the trend, and buy a fuel-efficient muscle car.
‘Smaller’ is relative, so if you have a big V-8, then a hot 4-liter six might be the answer, but if you have a hot 3.5-litre car, you will want to look for a car that is much smaller – say a two-litre coupe. One thing to remember is that most of these cars are front-wheel drive which are not so good for muscle cars – but there are a lot around.
The Renaultsport Megane 230 is a good example, as is the Ford Focus ST, which has a 2.5 litre engine, but which is quite economical. Both of these are good examples of fast small cars.
Others are the Honda Civic Type R and Vauxhall Astra VXR. Or, you can go even smaller with a Fiat Grande Punto Abarth
Get an ordinary car tuned up
Another idea is to get a really small car and get it tuned up by an engine tuner. Nowadays, thre are engine tuners in many countries, even Japan where the regulations are quite strict, but there are still plenty of muscle cars about. You can also make quite an old car, like a little Renault Clio go very fast with the right bits and pieces.
You need a tuned cylinder head performance air filter and new exhauste manifold. Of course, you need to improve the suspension and brakes as well. You’ll get a lot of fun making the changes and driving the modified car as well.
Recently, I was driving to a race track out in the country behind a queue of about 6 cars. We went round a bend, and there was a long straight. In a flash I heard a roar, as someone changed down, and a little Renaul Clio, about ten years old, pulled out from the middle of the queue of cars, and shot past them very quickly. I could see from the big exhaust and fat tyres that this was a tuned up car – aid did it go! So you see you don’t need a new car to turn it into a fast lcar.
