Hip Revision, Is it Necessary?

Several problems caused by hip implants are subject to controversy and dispute, news reports say. The failure of hip implants may often be triggered by several reasons such as loosening, infection and dislocation, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. These implants are built to last for more than a decade but there are several different interacting factors that come into play to cause hip implant failure. Orthopedic experts are making studies to determine possible ways to improve hip implant quality and prevent failure of prosthesis from occurring.

All hip implants are at risk of wear and tear, orthopedic experts say, but it may be delayed when these prostheses are used properly. Revision surgery is often earlier for younger and active individuals than those who are not. It is then important to inform patients of these risk factors. It may be possible to delay a hip revision procedure but some health experts believe that it may cause more problems. However, it is may be hard for some patients to decide.

The possible reasons for undergoing a hip revision procedure are as follows:

– Loosening

o It is the most frequent reason for a revision because it leads to the failure of hip implants. This problem is caused by the regular use of the prosthesis. The damage the spreads as the loose components rub against the surrounding bone.

– Infection

o It is during the first six weeks after the procedure that patients are vulnerable of contracting infections. It does lessen after that specified time but patients need to remember to take extra caution when going to the dentist as it may increase the likelihood of infection. The bacteria may lodge into the implant and cause problems. Antibiotics may help with the infection but a hip revision is needed if the damage has been extensive.

– Dislocation

o The dislocation of the hip implant is highest during the first six months after the operation. However, only repetitive dislocations are the ones treated with a hip revision surgery.
