Ensure Your Home Remains Secure This Christmas Time

January 6, 2013 robot Family

Throughout the Christmas holidays, many property owners leave their houses – be it a house, flat or bungalow – unattended whilst staying with relatives. Spending time with family is what makes Christmas such an fascinating time, specially when you get the additional advantage of sleeping over at your aunt’s farmhouse, your Dad’s penthouse or your nans cottage. In my eyes, a home away from home at Christmas produces an even more fantastic Christmas! Yet, it’s worth recalling that while you are having a magical time with all the family, your house remains empty and at risk of a robbery (see Southend Locksmith).

So, we have compiled a summary of handy hints to help keep your house secure whilst you enjoy your Christmas getaway.

Tip 1: Hire A House Sitter

If your house remains empty over the Christmas period, or any time of year for that matter, the chance of it being burgled becomes significantly higher. So, have a think about asking a neighbour, close friend or trusted family member to watch over your home whilst you’re away.

Tip 2: Inform Your Immediate Neighbours

If you are on friendly terms with your neighbours, it is worth telling them whenever you plan to go away, be it for 1 night or 10. Ask your neighbour/s whether they can keep ‘a watchful eye’ on the place. You could even ask a neighbour or family member to park their car in the drive to help create the illusion that someone is home.

Tip 3: Avoid Leaving the Light On

Despite many advising that leaving the light on will deter all thieves and robbers, this unfortunately is not the case. One single light being left on will not fool thieves into thinking that no-one is home, especially when left on all night long. If you feel more comfortable with the light remaining on, then ensure you use a light on a timer to avoid wasting energy and to create a more realistic feeling. Why not connect the TV or radio to a timer too for an even fuller effect.

Tip 4: Exterior Lighting

Installing motion-detector lighting to your home in time for the festive period is a superb idea (see Locksmiths Company in Rayleigh). Aim to fit them to the front and back of your property as an effective deterrent.

Tip 5: Don’t Leave A Trail of Paper & Post Whilst Away

If you are planning a lengthy Christmas vacation, ensure that there is not a trail of paper left blocking your letter box or piled up on your driveway. If you live alone as opposed to in a house share or flat share, consider suspending your mail whilst you are away. This way, you not only have one less thing to worry about, but you can also save a few pennies not paying out for unnecessary papers.

Tip 6: Ensure All Doors & Windows Are Locked

Before you head off for the Christmas holidays, make sure that you secure all windows and doors as appropriate. Ensure all sliding doors are secured with a supplemental lock.
