Dynamic Stretching for Athletes
Stretching is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. Regardless of the fact, stretching exercises are often done poorly or completely eliminated from a workout. Why does this happen? Why do so many people disregard stretching?
There are many differences between doing static stretches and doing dynamic stretches. It is important to understand that they are both important in their own ways but there are a few differences that need to be addressed.
The focus of this short article is to not only discuss these differences, but to dive deeper into active stretching.
Always remember that a healthy mix of resistance training, cardiovascular training and flexibility training makes up a healthy and fit lifestyle. Unfortunately, with so much focus being placed on resistance and cardio training, stretching is completely overlooked, if not eliminated.
This is a bad mistake. It is important to understand the benefits of training for flexibility. Not only does a good flexibility element minimize acute and chronic injuries, but it is also known to help improve your posture and ability to perform everyday activities.
As a certified trainer, I always advise clients and athletes to perform dynamic active stretching drills to get ready for any movement-based workout and to do static stretching exercises to loosen their muscles after a workout. Dynamic stretching helps improve your dynamic flexibility and can also be utilized as part of your initial warm up.
