Australia is known as one of the best locations to visit in the world. This island-continent features one of the most unique cultures, wild life, structures, people and life styles. There are several tourist destinations and attractions scattered all over the island, but despite its fame, there are still so many wonders that tourists can find in the “Land Down Under”. Here are a few interesting facts about Australia:
- Australia is a unique location with several species of plants and animals that can only be found there. Among the most famous of these animals are the kangaroos, koalas, emus and the kookaburras. But there are also several more, such as more than 1,500 species of spiders and 6,000 species of flies.
- Australia many be the smallest continent in the world, but it is also the world’s biggest island. In fact, Australia is three times larger than Greenland, the next largest island in the world.
- Australians have a quirky tradition of building great big structures or replicas that can be seen from the roadside. There is the Big Tasmanian Devil in Tasmania, the Big Banana in New South Wales, the Big Apple in Queensland, and the Big Koala in Victoria.
- Australia has the longest stretch of beaches in the world. There is no location in Australia’s cities that is more than 1000 kilometers from a beach. These beaches are found at the Australian coastline, which is 25,760 kilometers long.
- More than one third of Australia is made up of deserts. These deserts are what people refer to as “the Outback”. There are 10 deserts found on the continent, the largest of which is the Great Victoria Desert, which 348,750 square miles wide.
- Australia is also called the Big Dry because it receives the least amount of rainfall among all inhabited continents. More than 70 percent of Australia gets less than 20 inches of rainfall each year.
- The Great Barrier Reef is located just off the coast of Queensland. It is the largest reef system in the world and the largest single structure made by living organisms. It is also the only living thing that can be seen from outer space.
- Most Aborigines in Australia believe that the cradle of life, or the origin of all life, is located in Australia. Most of them also believe that the first man came from the deserts of Australia. Aborigines have actually inhabited the island for thousands of years, with the earliest found skeleton dating back to more than 60,000 years ago.
