Hydromulching: Guide to Lawn Preparation
Hydromulching is a seeding method in which a liquid mixture of water, grass seed, fiber mulch, fertilizer, and sometimes a binding agent is sprayed onto an area using a specialized machine. Such process is cheaper than laying sod, and requires less work than manually seeding a lawn. When the ground is prepared, the liquid mixture clings to the ground and has a small tendency to be blown or washed away by water or wind. As the mulch in the mixture decomposes, it adds organic material to and improves the quality of the soil which is beneficial to the grass. But before spraying, it’s essential that the soil is properly prepared. Follow this step-by-step guide for great results:
1. If there is an old lawn, apply herbicide to clear the area. Typically, the chemical will take about three weeks to kill all grass as well as the weeds. Before you till the ground, clear all debris and dead grass and/or weeds.
2. Loosen the soil by tilling your area at least four inches deep. Rake and smooth out the ground by filling in holes and low areas. If necessary, adjust the soil’s grade. Before doing hydromulching, all debris must be removed from the lawn.
3. With a pH test tool, test the . Check with a hydromulching company regarding the most suitable pH level for the type of seed you’ll grow. If the pH level of the soil is high, you could reduce it by applying sulfur to the area. If the pH level is low, you can increase the pH by applying ground limestone. Start by applying small quantity of the substance to adjust the soil’s pH slowly. Test the pH level after a a few days and if necessary, apply more sulfur or limestone.
4. Use a lawn roller to lightly compact the ground before performing hydromulching. Fill the roller a quarter full of water so the ground won’t be heavily compacted. Otherwise, hydromulching would not respond well.
5. Water the lawn well two days before hydromulching. Be sure that water is absorbed to several inches into the soil. Consider installing sprinkler systems before performing hydromulching, as this will help with the watering and can prevent any damage to newly developed grass.
6. Grass seeds will quickly germinate and develop, so be ready to mow the new lawn for about 3 to 4 weeks after seeding. Contact a hydromulching Brisbane services if the seeds did not grow or if the area isn’t covered well, because spot treatment may be necessary.
