What’s For Dinner Tonight?

My cousin Gretel invited us over for dinner one night as little play date for our kids. I always feel a little apprehensive taking my kids over to her place, only because my kids sometimes just do not behave themselves. Fernando, our younger son lacks the self-control to stop himself from asking for things upon visiting people while our older son Fidel is much more able to restrain himself. So anyway, I put my kids in the car and drive them myself couple of blocks to Gretels house as my husband was out of town.

The children busied themselves quietly until it was dinner time. Gretel enjoyed cooking and that night she cooked up some wonderful chicken wings. They were roasted with salt and pepper and were simply delicious. The kids enjoyed them too, but Fernando seemed to have enjoyed them a little too much. He began over-eating them and soon started snatching wings from others plates as well. I was terribly embarrassed and tried my best to calm him down. I felt a huge feeling of shame as I drove both of them back after the monsterous tantrum I had just had to stop him from continuing.

The next day I called Gretel and noted down all the unique chicken wing recipes she had. Thanks! I love your fried chicken. I used to think that nobody can prepare chicken for a family dinner like mom, but you have proven me wrong. I made some exactly as per your recipe and it was a hit. Everyone loved it! Whole house was full of the delicious smell and the kids could not get enough of it.

The dog was going nuts waiting for his turn at the leftovers. Next week is a footy night and we will have a few friends over to watch the game together. I think it will be a great choice for casual gathering. Your choice of spices is just great. Personally I am not a great chicken lover but with a dish like that I could convert myself. A simple dish but very effective. Mom will be jealous! I wont tell her where I got the recipe from. Every girl can have a secret. When I was in Medical school back in the year 2004, my roommate and I would always dig up old recipe books and try out something new.

All the other girls on our hostel floor would gather in our room for a nice delicious meal. It was a nice method of learning, as well as it was enjoyable. The only issue was that we couldn’t use gas to prepare food in the rooms. We were permitted only to use electric articles like electric kettles, microwaves and electric hot plates. The microwave was our easiest way out. We would have grilled vegetables, beef, pork ribs and chicken wings and breasts at least once a week, during the weekends. My roommate who was a great fan of cooking had a huge collection of various kinds of grilled beef recipes, grilled chicken recipes and fish recipes. My batch mates enjoyed this food because cooking it was a fun experience, the food was definitely healthy and they could maintain their body weight by cutting down on the fatty fast foods.
